Career Empowerment Speaker Inspires Students

March 8, 2017

Yesterday, guest speaker James Mackey II inspired students with a presentation about career empowerment. Mackey spoke about his philosophy of empowerment as the combination of information, education, resources, and opportunity.

He explained to students that in order to land the jobs that they are passionate about, they must stay focused on their careers, educate themselves about companies they want to work for, and remain “humble, but hungry.” He broke down the steps to success as S.M.A.R.T. goals:

  1. Specific
  2. Measurable
  3. Action Plan
  4. Realistic
  5. Time Stamp

Sponsored by the departments of Career Services and Student Life, the presentation took place during College Hour on the Commons. The interactive presentation captured the attention of students right through to the end, when Mackey encouraged everyone to follow his success formula of “Information +Application = Transformation.”

Mackey is an OfficeTeam Staffing Manager for Robert Half International, a specialized staffing firm. He works closely with hiring managers, organizations, and educational institutions from a large number of reputable companies.  He is also a fourth generation community activist who previously served as the Program Outreach Director for The H.E.V.N. Coalition.
