Sabrina Green
2009 Plaza College GraduateCurrently: 2nd semester of the B.B.A. Program
With grace, determination, fierce intelligence, and resilience of the highest order, Ms. Sabrina Green has earned her place as one of Plaza College’s finest alumni and current Bachelor’s students.
However, Ms. Green’s journey at Plaza College did not begin easily. Many students struggle to balance school and life in their first semester, but Ms. Green’s first semester was eclipsed by great tragedy. After only a few weeks of classes, her only son passed away; ten months later, she also lost her youngest sister.
“I wanted to just sleep and not wake up. I was really ready to quit. I was not coming back to school until Dean Loffert called me. Then, I received so many well wishes from students, staff, and instructors. I came back, and I’m glad I did.”
Since she returned to Plaza, Ms. Green has been on a path to great success. Not long after her first semester, Ms. Green’s stellar work ethic and professionalism earned the respect of her professors and the administration; this led to her becoming an employee of the college, supervising the Promenade desk. Her responsibilities include enforcing the college’s dress code, maintaining order on the Promenade, communicating with Student Services and Admissions, and assisting students and staff as the occasion arises. As anyone at Plaza College knows, there is never a dull moment on the Promenade.
“A while back, one of the students said to me, ‘There is someone over there with her feet up.’ I said to her, ‘Excuse me? Can I see your I.D.?’ She said, ‘Oh, I’m not a student. I was tired, so I thought I would come down here to rest.’ I politely asked her to leave,” Ms. Green said.
While at Plaza, in addition to working for the college, Ms. Green has maintained an exceptional G.P.A. Of this she says, “There is no secret to balancing school and work; you have to learn how to prioritize.”
As a result of her efforts, in June of 2009, she graduated with high honors. Moreover, the faculty and administration selected her to receive the Pastor Frank Rafter Scholarship to pursue her B.B.A. This was revealed to her during the Graduation ceremony, in the presence of her classmates, their families, the administration, the faculty, and the staff of Plaza College. Everyone gave her a standing ovation.
“I was shocked, surprised, happy, and emotional all at the same time. When they called my name, I thought I was hearing things. I still can’t believe it. I came back for my G.E.D. and wound up with a scholarship to get my B.B.A,” Ms. Green said.
In October of 2009, Ms. Green earned two more honors. She was inducted into Plaza College’s two new honor societies: Sigma Kappa Delta and Alpha Sigma Lambda. As a member of Sigma Kappa Delta, she has helped coordinate the Plaza College Haiti Relief Initiative, which takes place over the course of February. In January of 2010, Ms. Green began an internship with the Cerebral Palsy Association of New York State, located in Manhattan. In this position, which was coordinated through the B.B.A. program, she is gaining invaluable experience in the accounting department, which is one of her prime interests.
“Sabrina is a kind, giving, and warm person, whose spirituality shines as a beacon for the rest of us to bask in. She is a role model for the students, staff, and administration,” Dean Lin Loffert says.
Ultimately, Ms. Green encourages all alumni to continue to pursue their
education - if possible, at Plaza College.
“There is a lot of competition out there in the job market. With your B.B.A, you have a better chance of getting the job you desire. It only takes three or four semesters. It’s a lot of work, but it’s well-worth it.”
