Just before final exams, students in Professor Butchy’s Modern Drama class enjoyed a field trip to the award-winning Broadway musical Kinky Boots. Read some of the student reviews below!

Guillermo Huerta Jr.: Todrick Hall’s performance as Lola was dazzling, enchanting, funny, and superb. I also very much enjoyed Killian Donnelly’s character as Charlie Price; his performance was vibrant and spectacular. The singing was also wonderful and joyous. I would rate this show a 10 from a scale of 1 to 10!

Sisha Khan: In Harvey Fierstein’s play Kinky Boots, the audience had no choice but to be totally hypnotized into a fabulous world of Price and Son’s shoe factory. The play is about a boy that inherited his father’s shoe company, one in which he has to try to save from going out of business, despite not wanting anything to do with the company in the first place. Luckily by fate, he met a drag queen who he later on realized was also a wonderful performer, and they connected as friends. That person influenced and motivated him to turn the shoe business around by making a whole new brand of shoes for performers that perform in drag who lack a good, sturdy, yet attractive pair of pair of boots.

Jennifer Moreira: I was most impressed by the scenic design done by David Rockwell. The props and the way all the objects just flowed together so easily from one scene to the next was absolutely breathtaking. Everything about this play was brilliant. Todrick Hall was an angel sent from heaven to play Lola!

Fnu Kamanpreet: Kinky Boots directed by Jerry Mitchell is a fun, jaw-dropping, and outstanding show. The audience gets to see how two extremely different men work together and save the shoe company. The audience can also see amazing dance performances throughout the show. The best actor of the play is Todrick Hall. He did justice to the role, and his dance moves and way of speaking everything is superb. He just nailed the expressions and movements.

Tonisha Venson: Todrick Hall really got into character and was able to make the audience laugh and even shed a tear. Haven Burton who played Lauren was another favorite of mine. She was hilarious and played her character so well! Randy Houston Mercer, who was in charge of the makeup, did an amazing job. The makeup on Lola was my favorite because her makeup color coordination went well with her bold personality and unique wardrobe. Josh Marquette is in charge of the hair designs in the play, and his work was beautiful. I liked how he switched up the looks for his wigs according to the character and scene. The wigs came in different colors, many lengths and amazing styles (that I will absolutely try in the future)!
