Finding Serenity in Shelter Island, NY

June 18, 2012

Summer Travels Blog Series

The second stop on our Plaza College Summer Travels Blog Series is close to home, off the North Fork of Long Island at Shelter Island.
Shelter Island is an island and quaint town in Suffolk County, Long Island. A leisurely drive down the Long Island Expressway and a quick ferry ride will have you there in no time!
A weekend on Shelter Island will be very different to the sightseeing activities Washington DC has to offer. Instead, sit back and relax on one of the many beaches, or spend a day at the Mashomack Nature Preserve, observing all of natures beauties. The preserve is part of the Nature Conservancy and comprises 1/3 of the island. You can also visit The Kissing Rock! This is a huge, well-known rock located at the end of Crescent Beach.
While in town, you can also visit The Ram’s Head Inn, which was the site of the Shelter Island Conference on the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics in 1947. Many famous physicists attended this location including Oppenheimer and Feynman.
A couple of other simple but fun things to do on the island include going to one of the many beautiful beaches, ride bikes, golf, bird watching at the nature preserve and horseback riding!
Shelter Island also has many great places to eat! Be sure to check out Bobs Fish Market, an authentic seafood restaurant, The Chequit Inn, The Dory, Pat and Steve’s and Bella Vita!
With all the relaxing activities and delicious restaurants Shelter Island offers, one could only expect a comfortable yet lavish place to turn in after a full day. Consider staying at one of the many Bed and Breakfast’s nestled throughout the island like Belle Crest or House on Chase Creek; or one of the beautiful hotels including Sunset Beach or The Chequit Inn!
Have you been to Shelter Island already? Are you planning on making a trip out there this summer? Let us know on the Plaza College Facebook Wall, linked HERE

Father’s Day | When and Where Did It Begin?

June 15, 2012
Did you know there are more than 70 million fathers in the United States? With Father’s Day quickly approaching, you may be wondering a few things about the special holiday.

In 1910, the first “Father’s Day” was proclaimed in Washington State. It was not until 1972, though, that the day became a nationwide holiday in the United States. In 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event in honor of Father’s Day. It was a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines. The following year, a Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, tried to establish an official day equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. Dodd went to local churches, YMCA’s, shopkeepers and government officials to gain support for her idea. Dodd got the support she was looking for and Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910.

After 1910, Father’s Day gained profound recognition and quickly began spreading across the country. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge advised state governments to observe Father’s Day as well.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated around the United States as a day to honor your father and male care takers for all he has done for you and his family.

What are your Father’s Day traditions? Do you have any special plans for this Sunday? Let us know on our Facebook page linked HERE!

Exploring Historic Washington, DC

June 8, 2012

Summer Travels Blog Series

To kick off our travel series, we are sending you to our country’s capitol, historic Washington DC. Behind its public face of luminous marble memorials and Capitol Hill politicking, DC leads a wondrously varies life. Musicians trumpet jazz, rock and the blues while museums welcome culture-seeks by day and hipsters by night. Lively arguments fly in the Capitol’s Senate and House Chambers, where legislators hash out US laws, but stop by the Washington Monument for a completely different perspective: staggering view of the green-swept mall and beyond.

Once you’ve had your fill of politics, wind down at the National Gallery of Art where Da Vinci’s mysterious Ginevra de Benci out stares you and Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party reels you in at the Phillips Collection. End a perfect trip on a nighttime Potomac River Cruise past stately memorials, all brightly illuminated in the dark of the night.

There are many ways to experience Washington DC, all within a weekend! You can take part in one of the many organized tours (found HERE), follow a suggested itinerary from the experts at Frommers or Fodors, create a custom guide to ensure you hit your must-see sights here, or simply print out a map and wing it! A few experiences worth looking into include watching the Supreme Court in action, viewing some of Washington’s landmarks by moonlight, visiting your Senator or House Representative and bicycling past the Potomac River and around the Tidal Basin.

Here is a description of each, provided by Frommers.com.

  • Watch the Supreme Court in Action: Behind the stately marble facade of the Supreme Court building, the nation’s nine, black be-gowned justices reveal intellectual brilliance and their own personalities as they listen to and question both sides of an argument. Is the famously silent Justice Thomas really silent? Is the famously aggressive Justice Scalia really so blunt? Only one way to find out: Wait in line for entry and a coveted seat inside the Courtroom.
  • View Washington Landmarks by Moonlight: There is nothing as spectacular as seeing the Lincoln Memorial illuminated at night, unless it’s the sight of the White House, the Capitol, or the Washington Monument lit up after dark. Go by bus on Tourmobile, by bike via a Bike and Roll excursion, or by boat aboard a Potomac Riverboat Co. cruise; all three operations offer narrated day- and nighttime tours.
  • Visit Your Senator or House Representative: Take advantage of your constituent status and stop by your Senator’s and/or Representative’s office on Capitol Hill to offer your two cents on current issues. Pick up passes to the Capitol’s Senate and House chambers and attend a session to observe your elected politicians at work. Make sure you’ve reserved Capitol tour passes online and tour the Capitol.
  • Bicycle Past the Potomac River and Around the Tidal Basin: Rent a bike and ride the paved bike/walking path that extends 11 miles from the Lincoln Memorial to the Maryland border (through Rock Creek Park). Or head the other direction from the Lincoln Memorial, following the combination of street, sidewalk, and pathway that encircles the Tidal Basin. The Potomac River, Rock Creek, and spectacular Washington sites are on either side of you as you make your way. For a really long bike ride, follow the pathway past the Lincoln Memorial, cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge to the trail on the other side, and pedal the 19 miles to Mount Vernon.

Astoria Planning to Build The First Outdoor Movie Studio Lot in NYC!

June 1, 2012
Kaufman Studios in Astoria has planned an expansion to build an outdoor movie studio lot, which would be the first outdoor lot in New York City. The project is in review for the second time, as it’s been stopped once before.

Senator Charles Schumer is all for the project and is urging the National Park Service (NPS) to authorize Kaufman’s proposal for the expansion. Expansion would start by enclosing 36th Street between 34th and 35th Avenues within the lot and construct an entry gate at 36th street and 35th avenue in Astoria. This would create a “studio campus” comparable to the ones seen in Hollywood.

The new outdoor studio campus would allow for filmmakers and production companies to film outdoor exterior and special effect shots directly adjacent to the interior sound stages. This would allow for more movie and television clients to pick the location because it would accommodate all of their needs. Many choose other locations instead for interior and exterior location convenience.

In 2010, Kaufman Studios spent $23 million on an indoor studio. The president of Kaufman Studios, Hal Rosenbluth, is excited for the project and believes that it will add much growth to the studio industry in New York and economic development in the neighborhood.
Schumer is hoping that the project will be in the works soon and completed by the summer of 2013

What do you think about the expansion of Kaufman Studios? Do you think it will benefit the area? Let us know what you’re thinking on Plaza College’s Facebook page linked here

Citi Bike Expands to Long Island City

May 30, 2012

Citi Bike -sponsored by Citi Group- is expanding to Long Island City! The Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced that “Citi Bike,” which is New York’s bicycle share program, decided to add 10 stations in Long Island City. These new stations are an addition to the ones currently in Brooklyn and Manhattan.  The decision comes at a perfect time since May also happens to be National Bike Month!

Citi Bike is providing an eco-friendly way of transportation for New York City residents. The program will launch in July 2012 and be operated by Atla Bicycle Share. Citi Bike is the nation’s largest public bike share system with 600 docking stations and 10,000 bikes.

The new docking stations in Long Island City have been advantageously placed so bike riders have access to many prime locations including waterfront parks, the business district and much more! The docking stations can lodge between 15 and 60 bicycles and will be positioned on sidewalks, curbside road spaces and plazas.

Would you be interested in participating in Citi Bike’s program? Let us know on Plaza College’s Facebook page linked here.
