REAL STORIES ABOUT REAL GRADUATES
Just think; this could be you!
Michelle J.
Patient Information Management, B.B.A.
Class of 2016
Patient Care Associate
Northwell Health
BEFORE PLAZA
Before Michelle enrolled at Plaza, it had been 15 years since she had attended school. Self-doubt and insecurities made her nervous about returning to school. “I was working as a home health-aid, but I knew in order to advance, I had to further my education.”
Michelle learned of Plaza’s Medical Assisting Program through a friend who happened to be in a similar situation to her. “When I heard her story I realized I was not alone. I realized there were other people in the same position as me who were not attending college directly out of high school. That gave me the confidence I needed to go in and pass my entrance exam!”
WHY SHE CHOSE THE MEDICAL FIELD
Working as a home health-aid had reinforced Michelle’s desire to work in the medical field. She had the opportunity to work with patients and devote herself to making their lives better. Her path was always clear; all she had to do was take the proper steps to achieve her goals.
“I knew I wanted to help people, I wanted to see their health improve because of the way I had helped them. That inspired me.”
HOW SHE USES HER DEGREE EVERY DAY
Michelle is currently working at Northwell Health as a Patient Care Associate. Proudly, she states, “My learning experience at Plaza was very hands on, it has helped me deal with the fast paced nature of my unit.”
Michelle emphasizes that her degree has served as a guideline throughout her career, “I utilize my degree every single day. I am completely prepared to work with the nurses and doctors, as well as meet the patient’s needs to better their comfort or answer their questions.”
She went on to explain that the Plaza Community was beneficial in other areas of preparation, even beyond academics. “The way we worked together, as students, through activities and exercises has come into play in the professional world. There are often times where it requires teamwork between me and my coworkers to come together and make sure the patient is as comfortable as possible.”
WHY SHE ENCOURAGES OTHERS TO CHOOSE THE MEDICAL FIELD
Michelle explains how a career in the medical field is the perfect fit for someone who wants to continually grow. “If someone stays stagnant in the medical field, that is their own choice, because there is always room for growth. There is always something more you can achieve.”
She encourages others to apply to the Medical Assisting program at Plaza because, “Plaza offers a sense of community and attentive teachers that you won’t find anywhere else. It can be hard to establish a one on one connection with professors in college, but you won’t have that problem at Plaza!”
Michelle believes those who care to help others, all the while pushing themselves to reach their full potential should begin their journey into the Medical Field. “Always believe that you can achieve it! You’re not alone in the journey.”
