REAL STORIES ABOUT REAL GRADUATES
Just think; this could be you!
Jenna B.
Patient Information Management, B.B.A.
Class of 2017
Access Service Representative
Northwell Health
BEFORE PLAZA
Before deciding to continue her education at Plaza, Jenna B. was tirelessly working long hours at a Costco warehouse. “I would work all day and then just go home. I was 28 years old, I was beginning to feel the pressure of my age, nearing 30, and felt like I needed something more.”
She had previously owned her own business and thought she would pursue a degree in Business Management.
WHY SHE CHOSE THE MEDICAL FIELD
As a former business owner, Jenna always imagined going to school to sharpen her business skills. But one day, she overheard two women speaking about their upcoming graduation from Plaza College, with a degree in Medical Assisting. They were discussing their opportunities and aspirations for after graduation, and Jenna was intrigued. That same night, she went online to begin researching careers available on the administrative side of the medical field. She was pleasantly surprised.
Jenna recalls, “I called Plaza and was invited to come in the next day to learn more about the programs offered. I visited the campus the next day and my whole world was changed!”
HOW SHE USES HER DEGREE EVERY DAY
As an Access Service Representative at Northwell Health, Jenna B. values the ideals of professionalism that she learned at Plaza.
She explains that during her mock interviews with Career Services, she learned how important it is to maintain a professional appearance in the workplace.  She encourages, “They showed me the value of learning how to express my own style in the most professional way. It was very important during my interview process.”
Jenna also highlights that when entering the work field, Plaza gave her the confidence to know she was prepared for any role she would fulfill.
She states, “ I knew entering my workplace that I had sharper and newer skills than people that had been working there for 10 years. I waited for opportunities to arise and then I would show them how I’ve learned in a more fresh and adaptive way.”
WHY SHE ENCOURAGES OTHERS TO CHOOSE THE MEDICAL FIELD
Jenna B., with her soft spoken manner, considers herself to have a shy personality. However, she feels working in the medical field has helped her gain confidence.
She clarifies, “Interacting with patients brings you out of your shell more than you would think it could. You begin to think of how you would feel if you were in their position, and how you would want someone to go out of their way to make you comfortable.”
Whether on the clinical or administrative side of the industry, working in the medical field can open your eyes greatly to the world around you.
Jenna shares, “You are feeling the rewards of helping others and at the same time, you are learning and you become inspired to take better care of yourself. It enforces the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”
