Plaza College Community Unites for Japan

By Professors Melissa Tortora and Jonathan Howle

It’s difficult to forget the 9.0 earthquake that struck Japan this past March, devastating the entire northern coast of the island country. The tsunami that followed also had drastic effects, destroying homes, schools, offices, and history.

The Student Affairs Committee, in conjunction with Alpha Sigma Lambda and Sigma Kappa Delta, rose to the occasion in record time and assembled a fundraiser on April 7, 2011 for Japan within just a couple of weeks after the disaster.

Thanks to the commendable efforts of many students, led by Student Affairs Committee Co-Chairman Jechibea Adu-Peasah, Plaza College was able to raise $1100. With the donation from the Callahan family, this means we sent $1600 to The Salvation Army's Japan initiative.

In addition, the event was used to educate the Plaza community on Japan’s remarkable culture and history, including the faith of Shintoism, the stunning architecture, and the country's most recent technological advancements (among them, robotic runway models!).

With an amount of $1112 for both the Arthritis Foundation and the American Red Cross, Plaza College will forever be thankful for the endless generosity of its students, staff and members.
