Christopher Hartley – Revisited

Interview by Seasons staff

*Since our initial interview with Professor Hartley in the winter, he has taken on a new leadership role at Plaza College. We interviewed him about his new responsibilities.

Tell us about your promotion since the first issue of Seasons.

My new title is Academic Leader, which entails overseeing the CPAT Entrance Exam, helping to shape the English curriculum, and working to make the LRC more helpful and responsive to students. What most excited me about the promotion was the chance to work more closely with students to address their academic needs.

How do you enjoy sharing Mrs. D’Aprix’s office? Do you two ever fight?

I don’t know how she feels about it, but for me, it’s one of the biggest perks of the new job. There is no fighting so far, though if the mounds of paper on her table get any more out of hand, things may change.

What is one specific accomplishment you have made in your position so far?

It may seem small, but one of the changes I am most proud of is the revision of Plaza College’s MLA style sheet. While the old one was great, I believe the revised version will ultimately be more accessible and useful to our students. I have also really enjoyed the MLA workshops that Mrs. D’Aprix and I have conducted this semester, and they give us the opportunity to communicate this important information directly to the students. They are also a great opportunity to teach former students as well as ones whom I had previously only met through the LRC.

What is on your agenda to achieve in the upcoming semesters?

I look forward to improving the CPAT testing, revamping the Information Literacy Forms (with the helpful assistance of the English faculty!), and continuing to develop and revise the post-tests used in our English classes.

Are there any answers from your previous interview that you would like to change or elaborate upon?

Only that I now have a worse case of  "Bieber Fever" than I did before! (Just kidding) The new high points of my teaching at Plaza were this year’s Graduate Recognition Ceremony and Graduation: two events that really showed the best of what Plaza students are capable.
