"Through My Eyes"

by Plaza College student Janet Hill and her daughter Zina O. Hill

Purple, black, gray, and auburn filled skies,

The colors filled my eyes on August twenty-nine

The day my world was turned upside down

No happy smiling faces just discomfort and frowns

“Why’s” “how’s” and “when’s” was running through my mind

But I had to stay focused ‘cause I didn’t have much time.

The house I used to live in and the scooter I used to ride

Both brought back memories of moments lost in time.

Of when my life was one and my family was whole

But now I’m left with nothing but a shivering soul.

The school I used to go to, the park in which I played

Were now submerged in water that the darkness had made.

The little brothers of mine, I used to despise

Were now ever so important and always on my mind.

As we searched for our parents all I could remember

Was the warm happy times that we all spent together.

I thanked God for sparing our precious lives

For we all shall go to heaven but in due time.

Mommy and Daddy wherever you are

Don’t lose hope just look at the North Star,

For when you do this you’ll never be alone.

Our faith and strength will bring you back home…

One year later, and I’m back in your arms

You holding me tight and singing my favorite song.

We all survived thanks to generosities and FEMA

But we’ll never forget the effects of Hurricane Katrina!
