Medical Assisting Students Enjoyed Two Major Celebrations in the Fall

By Seasons staff

This past fall, students in Plaza College’s Medical Assisting program celebrated two important events in the lives of any Medical Assistant.

First, from October 17-21, 2010, Plaza observed Medical Assistants Recognition Week.  This week is designated by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the premier organization that serves the professional interests and educational needs of medical assistants. They also provide many services and activities that help medical assistants train for and plan an exciting career in this amazing profession.

On Thursday, October 21, both day and extended day students were treated to pizza on the Promenade. The Medical Assisting faculty and administration came down to celebrate with them. Members of the honor societies Sigma Kappa Delta and Alpha Sigma Lambda coordinated the set up and serving of the food.

Then, on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, the college held its fourth annual Medical Assisting Candle Lighting Ceremony. Many of our top Medical Assisting students were inducted into the AAMA Professional Society. Before the ceremony began, Plaza provided food for the students and their family members. Then, during the ceremony, they recited the pledge of professionalism and all received Medical Assisting pins.

Alpha Sigma Lambda President Wanda Barrera, a graduate of the MA program and current student in the PIM program, spoke to the students about her own personal journey and what being in the medical profession means to her.

The ceremony was planned by Dr. Darryl Anderson and Professor Lynn McManus.

O. Johnson (3rd from l.) and Marina Marte (4th from the l.) It was an exciting fall for Plaza’s MA students, with MA Recognition Week and the Candlelight ceremony.
