Plaza Celebrates New Dental Hygiene Program

November 2, 2017

On October 20, Plaza College celebrated the grand opening of its dental hygiene program with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Attendees gathered on Plaza’s terrace and in the Commons to hear about the program from President Charles E. Callahan and Chief Operating Officer Charles E. Callahan IV.

The future opening of Plaza’s dental clinic was also welcomed by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and Congressman Joe Crowley. Speakers were joined for the celebration by local elected officials, Plaza trustees, Academic Dean Marie Dolla, administrators, faculty, staff, colleagues, and the first class of Plaza College dental hygiene students.

The Community Dental Clinic will open in Spring 2018 as part of students’ patient-care training, providing preventive dental procedures such as dental prophylaxis (cleanings), radiographs, topical fluorides, and oral health education under the supervision of licensed dentists and dental hygienists. The clinic will be dedicated to expanding access to necessary preventive dental care and will serve students, faculty, and staff, as well as the public.

After a two-year accreditation process, the Plaza College Dental Hygiene Program was approved this year by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association to offer the first dental hygiene program in Queens and the first in New York City in 27 years. The first group of dental hygiene students began classes in September.

For more information about applying to the dental program or the dental clinic, contact Program Director Dr. Laura Sleeper at 718-779-1430.
